Sample Comments for Your ESL Classes

As an online teacher, your job doesn’t merely focus on explaining the subject matter or correcting your student’s mistakes during the class. Most ESL companies require teachers to assess their student’s behavior and skills. They must give written feedback about their pupil’s abilities in pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and fluency. Doing so will give the students a clear idea of improving their performance. It isn’t unknown to us, teachers, that we sometimes don’t have enough time. We might have so much on our plates, and writing student feedback can be inconvenient. As an ESL teacher, I can relate to this situation, so I created this post. Feel free to explore the article, and be sure to bookmark this page for easier access in the future. Now, giving student feedback is easy. Simply locate the comment, copy, and paste. Don’t forget to adjust the gender-related words if necessary, and you’re done! Here are some sample comments for your ESL classes:
Vocabulary
*She has developed a fair-sized vocabulary for this level and learned many new words during lessons. Nevertheless, her language needs to cover a more extensive range of topics and contexts. On the other hand, she understands how to naturally and accurately deploy words. *You are a diligent student. You exhibit a calm and serious perspective when enhancing your knowledge and skills. Please learn more words persistently so it will be easier for you to convey your opinion. *When you have learned a new word, try to use it in several sentences. This will help you practice your sentence construction skills and will aid you in better expressing your ideas.
*You were very active in the class discussion but had difficulty expressing your ideas, and your comprehension needs improvement. Sometimes, you tend to guess the meaning of the teacher's question, so you sometimes give answers that aren't related to it. Please acquire more vocabulary to enhance your skills and learn as many grammar rules as possible. Have a nice day! *Write down the words you learn from your classes and review them whenever you've the chance. You can check one word at a time and familiarize the spelling, and practice using it in sentences.
*The student has a minimal vocabulary bank. She needs to learn English words as it is necessary for her to express herself. Start with basic and simple words, then move on to difficult ones. She can also learn more by listing unfamiliar words when reading English materials and checking them out in the dictionary. The best way to remember the meaning of words is by using them in sentences too. *You will be able to remember the meaning of the words better if you use them in real life. Thus, try writing sentences using the words you learn or use them when you're talking to somebody in English.
Pronunciation
*She can pronounce words clearly and can read consistently and with ease. But she makes minimal lapses in word stress. *Her diction is perfect, and she loves participating in class activities and exercises. She appears to have quite a strong vocabulary, and her answers to questions are usually accurate. She was able to express herself in the best way that she could. She was able to associate the topics with real-life situations. *The student is good at pronunciation. She is articulate in some way. She did her best to read well and listened to the teacher's corrections. She can do better with constant practice. *She is eager to learn and improve her English which will take her far. Reading aloud at home and in class would greatly help her with this. *Continue to acquire more vocabulary for the enhancement of your comprehension.
*You need to practice reading words with "long a" sounds. I suggest you install an English dictionary on your phone or computer. There are a lot of offline dictionaries that would let you listen to the pronunciation of words. Have a list of words with the "long a" sound and read them at least once daily. Just rehearse one step at a time. A few minutes of practice daily is more effective than spending long hours in just one day. You will remember things better when you are constantly exposed to them. *Thank you for your participation and patience during the class. Please practice reading from basic. You can express yourself in simple words, but it would be better if you learned to read. You can try using Phonics books, to begin with. *The student's diction needs much improvement. She needs to study from the basics. I suggest that the student learn Phonics.
*The student can speak and read fluently; however, she speaks and reads too fast, affecting her diction. She must learn the proper lips, teeth, and tongue movement and positions to utter words with clarity. *Practice reading words with "short vowel i" sounds, my dear. You may also try reading pairs of words that have long and short vowel sounds, such as will-while, fill-file, etc. You can also practice "long e" and "short i" pairs. For instance, will-wheel, fill-feel, hill-heel, dip-deep, pick-peak, it-eat, and so on. *Her reading skills need improvement. She makes errors with the letter sounds within a word. Constant practice will help. *She knows how to pronounce words but tends to speak fast that she skips reading some words in the sentence. Just practice regularly.
Grammar/Comprehension/Speaking
*She can't make sentences. The student's comprehension is feeble. *She now reads with a genuine passion. Her ability to describe what she is reading while demonstrating a thorough comprehension of the text and its context is impressive. With so much of what she reads, she has been able to relate text to text and the world because of her previous knowledge and varied life experiences. *You were very focused on the lesson and were confident enough to express your ideas fluently. You are also good at associating the lesson with real-life situations. Keep honing your skills. I can see real potential in you. She has many insightful ideas to share with the class. She tackles new challenges seriously and with a positive attitude. Moreover, she shows perseverance in all she does. *She is a superb oral communicator and has improved since the course started. She makes tremendous effort to ensure that there are as few faults as possible while speaking with a lovely fluidity. Her speech sounds more understandable. *She enjoys listening to stories and can distinguish sounds in words. She has shown an incredible amount of improvement in her confidence. *Listening is one of her natural strengths, and she has taken full advantage of every chance to practice. She picks up the gist of listening to texts successfully and pays excellent attention to specific details. She can handle many different types of content during listening activities. *You did well in today's class. Keep sharing your ideas so you can practice your speaking skills, and don't be shy to ask questions to further enhance your knowledge. *She is consistently enthusiastic in our classes, shows honesty when she doesn't understand something, and never hesitates to share her thoughts about the topic we are learning. Wonderful! *You did your best to express your ideas in class today. Keep acquiring more vocabulary to enhance your comprehension and speaking skills further. *You were expressive and made correct sentences most of the time. Your pronunciation is incredible too. I noticed that you took time to think first before answering questions and making sentences. That is very good! I hope that you learned something from today's class. I'm looking forward to seeing you again. *The student’s skills have improved remarkably. Her comprehension is better, and she can express her ideas more clearly and fluently. Keep up the excellent work! *Her pleasant attitude helps create a friendly learning environment. She talked about the topic with interest and contributed to the discussion well. *She's capable of constructing sentences but sometimes needs to be reminded to answer in a complete sentence instead of simply using keywords. Hello! You did a magnificent job in class today! You expressed your ideas despite having some difficulty. Keep it up, and continue to enhance your skills! *She likes talking very much, and it's a good way for her to improve her skills and confidence. She is always relaxed and interactive in the classroom. *You're good at making sentences. You can construct sentences in the proper structure though sometimes the thought can be a bit elusive. Continue to practice both your oral and written communication skills. *Try to integrate reported speech more in your storytelling to make it more interesting. For example, instead of saying: Mom said, "What a bright idea!" You can say: "Mom said that it was a very bright idea." *I only noticed minor lapses, and that's with the grammar. Try to review singular-plural and present-past tenses and incorporate the rules when making sentences. I'm looking forward to seeing you again.
*You are much more confident in reading than speaking activities. You are a good reader, but one area of improvement is your participation level in speaking activities. You're usually quiet whenever the teacher asks questions. I suggest that you'd be more vocal. It's okay if you don't know how to answer, but you should do your responsibility of telling the teacher about it. It is crucial that the teacher knows what the matter is. Students need to be more vocal if there are things they don't know. *My dear, you are primarily quiet in class. Try to share your ideas and use complete sentences because it's the best way to improve your speaking skills. You are a smart kid, but you were not paying much attention in class. *My dear, try to understand the thought of the sentences you are reading. Ask your teacher to explain or clarify if you can't understand something. Comprehension is fundamental to learning a second language well. It is also the key to retaining a lesson properly. *Note: When the sentence is in the present tense, we add -s or -es to the verb when the subject is singular, and we DO NOT add -s or -es when the subject is plural. *Good answers to questions are not the exact words from the book, but one's own words based on the idea studied. Try using your own words or rephrasing the sentences when answering questions about our topic. If you don't read the exact terms from the book, it will show how well you understand the lesson. *I appreciate the effort you've shown in class. You never hesitate to share your ideas, and that is very good. However, it would be best if you listened first before answering. If you are only guessing the meaning of the question without listening well, you tend to think of the answers without comprehending what was asked. This will make you give incorrect answers. Try not to assume what your teacher’s words mean, especially regarding instructions. Ask for clarification if you are unsure what the teacher wants you to do. Learn to wait for the instructions before moving on. Today, you just kept reading when I requested you to pause. We shouldn't rush to the next page of the book for the sake of finishing the whole material, dear. Haste makes significant waste. What matters most is not that we spend the entire book but that you fully understand the content. Quality is still more important than quantity. *My dear, whenever I ask you whether there are words you don't understand, always scrutinize our book and ask questions. We are not in a hurry to finish the lesson. If you don't ask for the meaning of the words you don't understand, you won't be able to make sentences when the teacher asks you to. *Dear, please do not guess the meaning of the teacher’s question. You usually give wrong answers because you pretend to know that you understand the question when you are only guessing it and thinking in advance about what might be asked. Ask for clarifications first. You won't learn anything if you pretend to know everything. Students come to class to acquire knowledge and practice their skills, not to show off. Thank you! *Her comprehension will gradually develop if she consistently acquires new vocabulary. Knowing the meaning of words will not only improve understanding but will also enhance the ability to express one's ideas and put them into words. *Learning more English vocabulary is necessary to enhance the student's comprehension, which is a prerequisite to developing her speaking skills. Once she understands the sentences and knows the meaning of words, it will be easier to express her ideas in words. For a word you don’t understand in a sentence, look at the other words around it. They will give you a hint. Try to guess the meaning from the context. *I was amazed by your class participation. You were attentive and active during the discussion of our topic; however, it would be better if you used your own words to express your explanations. You don't need to read the exact terms from the book.
